Street Car Track On Corydon to Go

Despite a warning that the move might jeopardize winter transit service on the street, civic improvements committee Tuesday decided to go ahead with improvements to the Corydon Ave. pavement.

C. H. Dahl, transportation manager, Winnipeg Electric Co., said this would force the company to remove its tracks immediately in the interests of economy, though it was doubtful if there were enough buses to handle peak winter traffic.

"We have street cars that are not being used, and if necessary we could resume street car service on Corydon," he said.

Two weeks ago committee asked the company to proceed with repairs to the Corydon track area without delay. The portion along the tracks was reported to be in deplorable condition and a hazard to traffic.

.....

Ald. M. Forkin said the attitude of the company seemed to be that there was no use ripping up tracks or doing anything that wasn't absolutely necessary until the question of ultimate ownership of the utility is settled. There had been talk of the transit system being placed under public ownership in accordance with recommendations of the Hogg report.

Ald. Forkin said the pavement had to be repaired in the opinion of the city engineer and the alderman discounted the warning that service might be jeopardized.

In a letter, Mr. Dahl said the company has been informed its share of cost of repairs to the pavement would be $19,200. To bring the track up to grade would entail an additional $7,500.

"The total would be $26,700 charged to the company to retain the tracks to care for a situation which may or not arise," he said.

Mr. Dahl continued: "We feel the people prefer the bus service to street car service and would like to continue it if at all possible. However, $26,700 is too great a sum to pay for the sake of taking care of the contingency for one winter.

"If the city persists in proceeding with the pavement repairs, as intended, we have no alternative except to remove the tracks now, even though it may jeopardize transportation on Corydon Ave. this coming winter."

The tracks would be removed now so that any expenditures would be for permanent improvements.

Sherbrook Bus Change

Committee adopted the following change in routing of the Sherbrook bus: North on Sherbrook St. to Alexander Ave., west on Alexander to Chambers St., north on Chambers to Logan Ave., east on Logan to Sherbrook, then south.

Complaints of D. R. N. Roberts regarding vibration from trolley buses now operating on Academy Rd. were referred to the sub-committee on transportation.

Committee was informed a bus service would be inaugurated shortly to serve the area west of McPhillips St. and north of Selkirk Ave. This will be done following work of fixing shoulders of the new 20-foot pavements on Selkirk Ave., Shaughnessy St., and Manitoba Ave.

A report stated that before trolley buses can be operated on Kelvin St. considerable paving work will have to be done by East Kildonan.

A request of the Elmwood Home and School Association that the route of the Talbot bus be extended to the downtown area was referred to the sub-committee on transportation.
