Shareholders of the Winnipeg Electric company were told at the annual meeting Monday by W. H. Carter, president, that the electric utility in 1943 generated almost 10 per cent more kilowatt hours than in 1942. The company, he said, still has about 20,000 h.p. that could be sold for firm power should a new industry be started.
Mr. Carter mentioned that the Winnipeg Electric is spending about $500,000 this year on extensions and improvements to the electric service.
The street railway, he said, showed the largest increase in volume of new business and gross revenue, 1943 being about 80 percent over 1939. The first three months of this year was about 10 percent higher than for the same period of 1942. The gas utility also hit a new high, running 8½ percent over last year's record business and a 33 1/3 percent higher than five years ago.
Discussing relations with employees Mr. Carter said there was reason to believe that if the company put into effect a reasonable pension plan the employees would accept it in lieu of an increase in wages and the directors wholeheartedly recommended this be done.
The following directors were in attendance: William Ferguson, George de B. Greene, New York; Edward Anderson, K.C., Isaac Pitblado, K. C., C. S. Riley, H. E. Sellers, William Whyte and W. H. Carter.
The slate of officers re-elected were: W. H. Carter, president and general manager; C. S. Riley, vice-president; W. E. Blodgett, treasurer; G. T. McIntosh, secretary.
