W.E. Co. Seeks To Use Buses At All Times

The Winnipeg Electric Co. is seeking permission from the Winnipeg city council and the municipality of Fort Garry to tear up its streetcar tracks from the River Park loop out to the University of Manitoba.

The No. 97 Park Line car runs out to the university during off-peak hours when the University bus is not running, and the No. 93 Park Line runs out along Jubilee Ave. to the subway at Parker Ave. at regular intervals throughout the day.

The street railway company proposes to replace these streetcars that it has already received permission from the transportation controller to put the buses into service next September.

The company's request was looked upon favourably by the public improvements committee Tuesday, and was passed on to the public safety committee, which met Wednesday.

Safety committee would not concur until assurance had been given by the company that no additional fare would be charged for the bus service. (Street cars carry passengers from anywhere in the city out to the university for one ordinary fare; the university bus charges 10 cents for passengers getting on downtown).

The matter was referred to the sub-committee on transportation.

Something that "surprised" Ald. Scraba was that the transit controller should grant permission for the replacing of electrically-operated vehicles with gasoline motor coaches, "especially as Winnipeg has lots of electricity and there is supposed to be a gasoline shortage."

Other traffic items were on the agenda and all were referred to the advisory traffic commission. They included: the routing of the Talbot bus up Henry Ave; making Water St. a one-way street and routing buses along Notre Dame east; placing school patrol boys again on Johnson Ave., at Brazier St. and at the point where the power line crosses Johnson.
