LRT myth put to rest

Re: Katz considers LRT (Ross Romaniuk, Nov. 20).

Kudos to Mayor Sam Katz for recognizing the superiority of a light railway transit system (LRT) over a bus railway transit system (BRT). Mayor Katz's comments that the biggest benefit of an LRT is how quickly it moves people from point A to point B in an environment that is very comfortable with easy access is fundamental to the argument of why people do not use buses in Winnipeg. People see service as slow, buses as dirty, bus shelters as unheated, etc. — whether this is reality or not.

However, I am very concerned about Coun. Jenny Gerbasi's misguided assertion that an LRT costs four to six times as much as a BRT when new infrastructure is involved. Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli puts this "myth" to rest once and for all by indicating that Winnipeg could build an LRT on existing railway infrastructure at a cost of $2 million to $3 million per kilometre, compared with a BRT system at $12 million to $15 million per kilometre.
