I find myself in total disagreement with the views expressed by Peter Holle in Light rail isn't the ticket to a better city. In particular, I challenge his opinion that light rail attracts riders from buses, not cars.
I am from Winnipeg, but have lived in Calgary for over a year, and whenever I use the LRT — which is often — it is to leave my car at home.
The LRT is smooth and quiet, and best of all, usually quicker than taking my car, especially to go downtown.
And it seems many Calgarians feel the same way. There are huge car parks at LRT stations in the suburbs for people to ride the rails into downtown.
Furthermore, LRT is more environmentally friendly, a point that seems lost on Mr. Holle. He would rather put even more cars on the road? More congestion? More pollution? That's the last thing Winnipeg needs.
