The fact that rapid transit acts as a strong impetus for infill development is one of the most persuasive reasons for building such a system in Winnipeg. I see evidence of this every day while riding Edmonton's LRT, a system which links the university, downtown Edmonton, and various sports facilities and commercial areas.
My decision to live in downtown Edmonton was influenced by the proximity of an LRT station. It is no surprise all but two stations are currently seeing significant residential development in their immediate vicinity.
Edmonton has capitalized on its LRT system in drawing residents back their once-moribund downtown and inner city, and it has curbed the pressure of suburban sprawl. I see no reason to believe things would be any different if Winnipeg were to build such a system.
After 30 years of debate and inaction, it is well past that Winnipeg invested in a rapid transit system that gives citizens a viable alternative to car traffic and sprawl.
