The Greater Winnipeg Transit Commission says it accepts the main recommendations of the Wilson subway report, and adopts them in principle.
It says, however, that considerably more study will be needed on costs and benefits, as well as detailed engineering surveys.
The commission suggests that the first stage of the subway along Portage Avenue and Main Street should be completed about 10 years from now, with construction starting in about five years.
It also says that the cost of subway construction should be borne by the public at large, while the capital costs of subway cars, maintenance shops and similar facilities would be carried by the commission.
The transit commission called for the subway report because it was not satisfied that the Wilbur Smith traffic report had given sufficient attention to transit problems.
One Winnipeg official said that the Wilbur Smith report practically "wrote off" transit as a means of moving people in masses — and put all its eggs in the "expressway basket."
